Disappearing Eyebrows? We Can Fix That for the Long Term
There are a number of reasons the hair in your eyebrows may thin or fall out, but if you want to get your hair back and keep it for years to come, we can help. Read on to find out how.

You’ve heard that your eyes are the mirror to your soul, but your eyebrows also play a prominent role in how you express yourself. The way they move with your eyes can speak volumes.

You might groom your eyebrows to be fashionable, but if you see them starting to thin out, it’s time to find out why. There are several reasons why these small hairs may be thinning, and they may or may not be related to grooming habits.

At Meshkin Medical, our experienced team of Michael Meshkin, MD, and Alister Meshkin, MD, helps patients looking for eyebrow hair restoration in Los Angeles County and Orange County, California.

If you want a solution that does more than paint in color to fill the gaps, we can help.

Grooming reasons for eyebrow loss

Removing hair to achieve a look you want is one thing, but over time, the hair may stop growing, or get thinner as it grows in. Eyebrow hair loss can happen due to plucking, tweezing, or waxing, and can be affected by your age (hair thinning and loss typically starts in your 40s).

Harsh makeup can also affect your skin and lead to losing this hair.

Even your diet can affect the loss of eyebrow hair, as nutritional deficiencies (not getting enough nutrients like zinc, biotin, or iron in your food) can lead to disappearing eyebrows and lashes.

Medical reasons for losing eyebrows

The term for losing eyebrow hair is madarosis, and it can affect one or both eyebrows or eyelashes and result in partial or complete loss of hair.

The chances of the eyebrows growing back depend on whether the condition is damaging to the hair follicles. You might also experience redness and itching.

The following are some of the factors that cause disappearing eyebrows:

  • Physical trauma, such as accidents or burns
  • Infections from viruses, fungi, and bacteria (e.g., ringworm, herpes simplex, HIV, syphilis, and staphylococcus)
  • Trichotillomania, a mental illness in which people pull out hair, including eyebrow hair
  • Certain medical procedures, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and laser treatments, can attack growing cells
  • Medications to treat other problems (e.g., Botox® injections, retinoids, androgens, anticonvulsants, and anticoagulants)
  • Skin cancer, particularly in malignant cases
  • Diseases such as alopecia areata, discoid lupus erythematosus, rosacea, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and scleroderma

How we can help

We offer eyebrow transplants to reverse disappearing eyebrows, giving them more volume and better shape. We extract the finest hair from other areas of your body and implant them one or two at a time to achieve a natural contour and appearance.

After a thorough medical history and examination, we can determine if this solution works for your needs, but it is effective for people who have burns, scars, alopecia areata, or trichotillomania.

This outpatient procedure is quick, and although you may experience some swelling for a short time, the effects last for years. Best results take several weeks to appear, but it’s worth the wait.
