Losing hair is not unusual as you get older, but why does it affect your beard, and what can you do about it? Find out more about what we can do to help.

Hair performs different functions depending on where it grows on the body and what kind develops. For instance, you have millions of fine hairs all over to help with regulating body temperature, and in specific places, they provide protection from the elements.

If your facial hair starts to thin or you notice bald spots in your beard, it can affect how you see yourself and how you think others perceive you.

At Meshkin Medical, our experienced team of Michael Meshkin, MD, and Alister Meshkin, MD, helps patients looking for hair restoration to fix their beard bald spots in Los Angeles County and Orange County, California.

To learn how to manage this kind of hair loss, let’s look at what causes it and what your options are for treatment.

Causes of hair loss in your beard

Everyone experiences hair loss (50-100 hairs a day is normal), but it’s not noticeable enough to show because hair also grows back rapidly in most areas of your body.

When you start losing more hair than you grow, it’s called alopecia, and often results in a widening part in your hair, a receding hairline, and bald patches.

When you lose patches of hair in your beard, it’s called alopecia barbae, which is an autoimmune illness in which your body attacks the hair follicles on your face, leading to loss of hair in circular patterns along your jawline.

It’s commonly related to allergies and asthma and other autoimmune problems like lupus, Type 1 diabetes, and psoriasis, but can happen due to various medications, ringworm, alopecia areata, chemotherapy, and physical or psychological stress.

Treatment options

Treatment options can vary depending on the cause of your beard patches. For example, we can treat ringworm with antifungal creams, and alopecia can be managed with steroid creams in mild cases.

We also offer a beard transplant, in which we transplant hair from the back of your head. We make very small incisions in the natural orientation of your hair and implant the hairs in the bald areas.

Several sessions may be necessary depending on your needs. This transplanted hair grows just like the rest of your beard, and you should see improvement in at least three months.

If you feel embarrassed by the absence of hair in your beard due to alopecia barbae, and shaving your beard just isn’t an option, make an appointment with us at Meshkin Medical today.
